The Experience
Now and
Zen
Play in Our Pagodas
FISHBOWL, located on Knox Street,
expands with the addition of a casual, new dining room, dubbed zen den.
Among the additions to the room, perhaps the most notable are large,
Lazy-Susan topped tables for up to 16 guests. Others may enjoy the
sheer-curtain pagoda enclosures around tables, which allow for secluded
privacy when closed.
A green "grass" shag carpet under three
tall Corian-topped tables graces the center of the dining room. These
centrally located tables, arranged chevron style, seat six people each in
communal fashion, meaning that a party of two may be seated with another
party at the same table. zen den décor is accented with hand-blocked silk
wall hangings, Birch floor lamps, framed aquatic glass window sculptures,
colorful hanging-pendant lanterns and a large faux-marble ceiling
sculpture providing ambient lighting. Buddha's bust proudly overlooks the
new dining room and lingers above the nightly offerings.
The FISHBOWL menu ventures from traditional Asian
cuisine, fusing tastes of the orient. House specialties include: Snap
Fried Chili & Salt Calamari with Kung Pao Dipping Sauce; Sizzling
Whole Crispy Fish with Bok Choy and Sweet Chili Sauce and the Wok Fried
Crab and Micro Green Stuffed Omelet Drizzled With Oyster Sauce.
In
the front room of FISHBOWL, The Bamboo Bar serves Trader Vic-inspired
cocktails to lounge patrons. Complementing the dinner menu are signature
drinks such as the Canton Cooler - a smooth blend of cranberry vodka,
Cointreau mixed with fresh and lime served over crushed ice and Dr. Tung's
Infused Sake Martini - fresh mango and papaya that add a fruit explosion
to this variation of the traditional martini.
The design of the
front room of FISHBOWL, with its natural fabrics and textures enhanced by
red and black lacquer accents, invokes a retro-Oriental feel. Oriental
lamps, bamboo trim and an impressive portrait of the young Dalai Lama,
painted by artist Filip Sotirovic, add to the downtown Hong Kong vibe of
this destination. From the banquettes lining the wall, diners may watch as
sushi masters ply their talents and oriental lanterns stir lazily in the
air overhead. The addition of the zen den dining room to this scene aligns
the axis of the heart and soul of FISHBOWL, a casual transcendence into a
world of healthy natural cuisine.
Menu features: Beef
Tenderloin Udon Sukiyaki Bowl with its rich Sake broth, Bok Choy and
flavorful Shitake Mushrooms; Baby Spare Ribs with a succulent Chili Carmel
Glaze; and Seared Tuna Steak in Fragrant Thai Basil Green Curry. The
dishes serve as an invitation to share with your fellow dinner companions.
Large Asian tables in zen den, complete with Lazy Susans, allow diners to
sample one another's dishes like the Seafood Jungle Hot Pot appetizingly
filled with Mussels, Shrimp Calamari in a Fiery Yellow Curry.
A
smaller, third dining room up three steps from zen den - appropriately
named the Opium Den-Temple of Love - overlooks the zen den dining room and
may be reserved for private dining. Opium Den features low-slung tables
made of three movable pieces with low Asian seating, ottomans upholstered
in leaf patterned fabric and pillow bricks lining the walls. Nestled
within floor-to-ceiling drapes, eight to twelve people can sup and sample
the downtown Hong Kong-inspired dishes that comprise the backbone of the
menu at FISHBOWL. A benevolent Buddha figurine and bamboo garden give
additional texture to the Opium Den - where shoes are removed before
entering. Leave your Manolos on the entrance steps.
The flexibility
of seating allowed with the additional dining room creates the ability for
FISHBOWL to accommodate a variety of groups and design seating
arrangements that exactly suit their needs. From a party of two to a party
of more than 100, there is now a spot for you to bow to the Buddha
within.
